Cross Stitch Critters

I Stitch Small Projects Now Little mouse image

I started doing cross stitch years and years ago. Long enough that I don't remember exactly when I started. And as I wrote that last line, I got curious to see if I could narrow it down. So, I left my computer and went looking in my stash of cross stitch patterns. I've got patterns dating back to 1981. Which means I've been doing cross stitch for over 20 years. That sounds about right.

When I first started, I did large projects that took a while to complete. My home got flooded in 1994 and a project I'd been working on for 6 weeks got destroyed. Trust me—5 feet of water in a home destroys a lot of stuff. Did you know that refrigerators will float in that much water? Mine floated enough to tip over and spill all the food out into the water. Wanna guess what my kitchen looked (and smelled) like once the water receded over the course of a week... in mid-July... in Southwest Georgia?

I do little projects now. If it can't be completed in a couple days or a week tops, I don't do it these days. That hasn't stopped me from “collecting” patterns for larger designs. I save these for one day when I get back in the mood to do a large project. That'll happen any day now. Really. I'm going to work at least one project from every pattern book I've ever collected. Really. Okay, not really. My stash of patterns is so large at this point that it's not humanly possible to complete them all. Sigh. And don't think for one second that fact will dissuade me from buying more patterns in the future.

My current cross stitch fad is small ornaments stitched on perforated paper instead of fabric. Inspired by this past Easter, I stitched a lot of bunnies. That's why most of the critters on these pages are bunnies. I've done other critters in the past, but given them away so I can't scan them in to show them off. I do plan on cross stitching some other animals in the future to round out my critter “stables”.
