Counted Cross Stitch
Cross-stitch or, more specifically, counted cross-stitch is a form of embroidery which is worked on blank even-weave fabric using an auxiliary pattern.
Fabrics
Cross-stitch is worked on even-weave fabric. Even-weave fabric have the same number of vertical threads as horizontal threads per inch. The most popular choices are Aida cloth and linen.
Fabric Alternatives
- Perforated paper
- Plastic canvas
- waste canvas
Needles
Use a blunt tapestry needle, usually size 24 or 26. Don't leave the needle in the design area as it can rust and leave a permanent impression in your work.
Floss
Six stranded embroidery floss is used. Generally, the floss is separated into the individual strands. Recombine the individual strands when patterns recommend using 2 or 3 strands. Seperating the strands first will make your cross stitches more smooth.
Types of Floss
- Standard -- DMC & anchor
- Over-dyed -- Sampler Threads & Gentle Arts
- Metallic -- Krenik
- Sead Beads may be combined with floss
Design
The pattern or design is typically shown on a graph. Each color in the design is indicated by a different symbol. A legend tells you which specific floss color to use for each symbol.
